Georgia's precolumbian Native American Indians had been living in Georgia for at least 12,000 years when the first Europeans, Spanish and French, showed up in the 1500s. Over the course of this great expanse of time these Amerindians developed from simple hunter-gatherers chasing Georgia's megafauna (such as mammoths and giant ground sloths) into complex political societies with one of the world's most sophisticated agricultural systems ever developed that has since completely transformed the world's food supply.

Unfortunately, as sophisticated as these societies were they never developed a system of writing and thus all we know about their greatness is what they left behind, what archaeologists have been able to dig from the ground, and what their modern-day descendants have been able to recall from their myths and legends. The story has been slowly unfolding over the past century and what an amazing story it is!
Visit our first exhibit, Ancient Architects of Georgia, (winner of the Georgia Historical Society's Roger K. Warlick Local History Achievement award) to explore these precolumbian cultures via streaming videos, 3D computer reconstructions and Quicktime VR virtual tours of Georgia's most important Native American historical sites. This exhibit has been award the Roger K. Warlick Local History Achievement Award by the Georgia Historical Society. If you enjoy this exhibit please consider becoming a member or making a donation to help fund future exhibits.
The Indian mounds, precolumbian pottery and artifacts all reveal civilizations more advanced than anything else in the United States.
