Native American architects reached the height of their accomplishments during the Mississippian period. The advent of large scale agriculture allowed the population to grow and settle into large permanent settlements. Leaders arose who saw the possibilities of such large labor forces. They would create the most sophisticated civilization north of Mexico and construct some of the largest truncated pyramid mounds not only in the state of Georgia but in the entire southeastern United States.
