Ancient Astronomers of Georgia |

Georgia's Native American Indians may have been conducting astronomical observations from at least the early Woodland period when the petroglyphs at right were carved in boulders located at the foot of mountains. Do these represent star maps? The most famous such petroglyphs in Georgia are to be found in Track Rock Gap near the base of Georgia's highest peak, Brasstown Bald.
Other intriguing evidence has also been found at the tops of other Georgia mountains. Massive circles constructed from tons of stone have been found encircling the tops of several mountains such as Alec Mountain. Other stone constructions such as the one atop Fort Mountain may represent the path of certain stars across the night sky.
Pottery from this time period has also been found that seems to contain designs and symbols representing astronomical observations as well as serving as calendars.
